Reading passage 1

Robert Moog is an American inventor who developed the Moog synthesizer. This is his one of the first synthesizers widely used as an instrument. Moog’s synthesizers were an important line of musical innovation in rock and jazz music in the 1960s and his 1970s. Robert Arthur Moog was born 75 years ago in Queens, New York City. During his teenage years, he became fascinated by electronics, especially an early electronic musical instrument called the theremin. Moog studied physics and electrical engineering at Queen’s College in New York City and Columbia University, later earning a Ph.D. He holds a BS in Engineering Physics from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. In 1954, while still a student, Moog founded a company selling theremin and theremin he kits.

Soon after, Moog set out to develop a keyboard instrument that could electronically reproduce the sound of any instrument. In collaboration with American composer Herbert Deutsch, Moog unveiled a prototype of his synthesizer at his 1964 conference. The device was a significant advance over previous electronic synthesizers, as it used new semiconductor technology that was smaller and significantly cheaper than previous machines. Called the Moog, the instrument was immediately in demand by musicians around the world.

In 1964, Moog began collaborating with American composer and organist Walter Carlos (now Wendy Carlos). Walter Carlos released the best-selling electronic music album Switched on Bach in 1968. Rock groups such as The Beatles and Yes, and jazz musicians such as Herbie His Hancock and Chick His Korea began incorporating his Moog synthesizer into their recordings. This trend accelerated in 1970 when he introduced the compact and portable Minimoog. The Moog synthesizer was also used prominently in the soundtrack to the 1971 film A Clockwork Orange.
